Purpose: Sent to Redeem and Upgrade (Part 2)

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. – Galatians 4:4-5

The second purpose of Jesus, as highlighted in this passage, is to upgrade the status of believers, whom He redeemed from the pressures of the law, from slaves to sons. Christ came to give the redeemed the privileged identity of being named sons of God and heirs to His inheritance.

Before the coming of Jesus, the people of Israel were the adopted children of God, and they were the ones God related mostly with, while peoples of other nations were considered heathens and outcasts, with whom the Israelites dared not mix so that they do not become contaminated by their paganistic ways which angered God to no end.

Meanwhile, God had always longed to have fellowship with these peoples too, and He desired that they be reconciled to Him. Therefore, in the fullness of time, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to come and redeem His lost children to Himself by becoming the perfect symbol of the accomplishment of what they had struggled through the ages to achieve– fulfilling the law.

He didn’t just stop there, by nullifying the requirements that humans needed to fulfil to attain affinity with God, Christ also upgraded the status of those He redeemed to sons of God; thereby giving them the rights and privileges of sons in their dealings with God and their activities on earth.

This is a piece of cheery news for all believers. Jesus did not just come to redeem your soul and release you from the legalistic burdens required to make your redeemed status sure, He also conferred the right of sonship on you, with all the perks that come with that.

You will succeed in Jesus Name!
