Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
– James 1:22-25
No person or thing can reveal yourself to you like the Word of God. Because God inspires the letters in the Bible, albeit through imperfect humans, for the benefits of mankind. That is why they hold true in all situations and have such force about them that is beyond the natural.
God does not sound like someone who fancies waste in whatever form. He is undoubtedly the best user of resources. That means He must value time more than we ever can, and would not say anything if He does not mean or want it done.
The passage above offers us an insight into how God intends us to take His word. We are charged not to consume God’s word alone; we must also practice what we have heard or read. Not applying the word is likened someone who sees him/herself in the mirror and then forgets what s/he looks like immediately s/he departs from the mirror. That is what it means to consume the word and then leave it at that, unapplied.
Conversely, there is a promise of blessing for whoever consumes the word of God, continues in it and practice what s/he has read. The Bible says such person will be blessed in whatever s/he does. Do you desire God’s blessing in what you do? Then make time for a daily study of His word and applying it too.
You will succeed in Jesus Name!
