Purpose: Ordained to Judge the Living and the Dead

Purpose: Ordained to Judge the Living and the Dead

And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. – Acts 10:42

We are back to our series on exploring the purpose of Jesus Christ with a view of identifying our own individual purpose in His. It is worthy to refresh our memory about two of the fundamentals of purpose: firstly, all human purposes are entrenched in the Bible; secondly, every purpose of man derives its origin in the purposes of Jesus Christ. That is why He is the consummate Man.

In the passage above, we are offered an insight into another purpose of Jesus Christ; He was ordained by God to judge the living and the dead. Being God, Jesus naturally had the prerogative of judgement. And, much more, having left His glory in heaven to come offer His life as a ransom on earth, He became even more qualified to determine our fate. But He is not about judgement alone, He also became many positive things to us, He is the Author of our salvation, our Alpha and Omega, the Author and Finisher of our faith, our good Shepherd, our Healer, our Restorer and much more.

So judging us isn’t all that He is about. He plays more positive roles in our lives besides. But, He is the One God has ceded the responsibility of judgement to. That was why He took great pains to enlighten us about the parameters He would base His judgement on. The first being our acceptance or non-acceptance of Him: He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John 3:18).

Another metric by which we will be judged is our disposition to His word, as documented in the Holy Bible: He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day (John 12:48).

The scope of His judgement covers both the living and the dead. Knowing therefore that Jesus wields such power in determining how you fare in life and where you will spend your eternity after death, don’t you think it is wise to take Him more seriously?

You will succeed in Jesus Name!
