How Do You Respond to Discouragement?

How Do You Respond to Discouragement?

This is a story that teaches us some lessons about how to deal with discouragement at moments in our lives. A man got dressed in the evening and set out on his way to God’s house. On his way to Church, the man fell and his clothes got dirty. He got up, brushed himself up and headed home. At home, he changed his clothes and was again on his way to Church. Again, he fell at the same spot! He, again, got up, brushed off the dirt and headed home. At home, he once again changed his clothes and walked out heading to God’s house. On his way, he met a man holding a lamp. He asked to know his identity and the man replied, “I saw you fall twice on your way, so I brought a lamp so I can light your way.” The first man thanked him profusely and the two went on their way to the Church. Once at the Church, the first man asked the man with the lamp to come in, but he refused. He asked him a couple more times and, again, the answer was negative. The first man then asked him why he did not wish to come in and pray. The man replied, “I am Satan.” The man was shocked at this

Purpose: Sent to Redeem and Purify

Purpose: Sent to Redeem and Purify

Purpose: Sent to Redeem and Purify …the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. – Titus 2:13-14 The passage above captures another twin mission of our Lord Jesus Christ to humankind; He came both to redeem and purify, to qualify and equip us for the assignments God has prepared for us. In the sense of redeeming us from “lawless deeds”, Jesus came to free us from the tangles of sin, guilt and everything that corrupts, holds back, disqualifies, slows down and discourages noble initiatives and productivity. His giving of Himself as a ransom for us is all we will ever need to be free of the shackles that limit and destroy. He has set us free by laying down His life and riches in exchange for our own lives and wretchedness. On the other hand, having thus redeemed us to perform, He also purified – more like equipped – us for good works. In other words, He didn’t just set us free to loaf and idle away; He also redeemed us to be productive and useful to ourselves, Himself and other people. He set us free to do

The Truck Driver and the Tyre

The Truck Driver and the Tyre

This is a story about wisdom in unusual places. One truck driver doing his usual load delivery at a mental hospital parked his vehicle beside an open drain. He discovered a flat tyre when he was about to return from the mental hospital. He jacked up the truck and removed the flat tyre to fix it. When he was about to fix the spare tyre, he accidentally dropped all the four bolts in the open drain. As he cannot fish the bolts in the open drain, he started to panic as to what should be done? Just then, one patient happened to walk past him and asked the driver as to why he was looking troubled. The driver thought to himself, since there is nothing much he can do or this mental joker can, so he might as well talk to him just to keep the bugging away. So he informed the mental patient about the whole episode with a helpless look on his face. The patient just laughed at the truck driver and said, “You cannot even fix such a simple problem? No wonder you are destined to remain a truck driver for life.” The truck driver was astonished to hear such a compliment from a mental patient. “Here is what you can do” the mental guy continued, “Take

Unconditional Love

Unconditional Love

This is a very moving story about unconditional love. A soldier was finally returning home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. “Mom and Dad, I’m coming home but, I’ve got a favor to ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring with me.” “Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.” “There’s something you should know,” the son continued, “he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a landmine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us.” “I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live.” “No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.” “Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.” At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. They were

Purpose: Sent to Mediate Between God and Men

Purpose: Sent to Mediate Between God and Men

Purpose: Sent to Mediate Between God and Men For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. – 1 Timothy 2:5-6 One of the purposes of Jesus Christ is to function as the Mediator between God and humans. Being of God and knowing the things of heaven, He could relate to the standards demanded by God in terms of conducts and modes. In the same vein, having lived as a human, He could also understand firsthand all the factors and frustrations that humans have to grapple with on a daily basis in their attempts to live, work, thrive, maintain success, please God, and fulfil numerous obligations. “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (Hebrews 4:14-15, NIV). The emphasis here is not that Jesus lived without sin, but that He is not out of touch with our realities; He knows the issues we face, how we
